Lithium-ion batteries degrade a little every day no matter what you do — but how you charge and use your phone can meaningfully change how fast that happens. None of this requires special apps or "battery saver" gimmicks.
1. Keep it between 20% and 80% when you can
Full charge cycles from 0 to 100% put more stress on the battery than partial top-ups. You don't need to obsess over this daily, but avoiding routine deep discharges adds up over a year of use.
2. Avoid charging in direct heat
Heat is the single biggest accelerant of battery wear — charging a phone in direct sunlight or under a pillow does more damage than almost anything else on this list.
3. Turn off what you're not using
- Bluetooth and GPS left on in the background quietly drain more than most people expect.
- Auto-brightness is usually more efficient than manually pinning the screen at maximum.
4. Use the charger that came in the box
Mismatched third-party chargers can deliver inconsistent voltage, which over time is harder on the battery than the manufacturer-matched charger and cable.
5. Update your software
Manufacturers regularly ship power-management improvements in software updates — skipping them means missing out on genuine efficiency gains, not just new features.
